How Art, Therapy, and Home became one…
From the day I was born, my parents steeped me in personal growth and development. As older parents raising an only child, they exposed me to a rich variety of music, diverse activities, and cultural experiences. I was often surrounded by the work of self-help gurus from around the world, each with their own expertise and understanding. At seven years old, I began participating in courses myself, often in the company of adults dealing with adult issues, problems, concerns, and, most importantly, solutions and healing. This unique upbringing laid the foundation for my natural inclination towards a life filled with self-reflection and a deep desire to understand the inner workings of humanity with compassion and coaching through self-awareness.
My love of real estate and home renovation has been a growing theme in my life since my teenage years when I overheard my uncle discussing real estate with my dad. My business-oriented mind held onto these ideas until nearly a decade later when my then-husband and I invested in a foreclosed home, gutting it down to the studs and starting over. This first crash course in home renovations taught me invaluable lessons and paved the way for easier and more beautiful subsequent projects.
But let's go back further, to my childhood days of entertaining my parents' friends at parties, crafting with my mother, making radio shows on tape, and building sculptures from scrap wood in Dad’s shop. These experiences were foundational to my creative journey, which eventually led me to become a full-time painter of abstract art after my divorce. (To read that full story, click here.) Expressing myself through art was fulfilling, but I found even more joy in creating custom works for commission clients. Bringing someone’s ideas and dreams to life on canvas, motivating and changing their lives through my art, was truly rewarding.
Home, as a feeling, has been an important part of my entire life. My mother, always on trend yet classic in her decorating, instilled in me a love for design. She was a true contemporary designer before the term became mainstream, ahead of her time with her DIY crafts and home projects.
Combining my mother's nature and my uncle's advice, I took on housemates to offset the instability of art sales as I began my art career. Hosting guests and transforming a house into a home became my second canvas and quite a passion. Over a decade of renting out rooms, I’ve met a diverse array of people, each offering a unique lesson in the business of landlord-ing and an extensive and beautiful study of how humans live at home. From the young to the old, the well-off to the nearly poor, the deeply in love to the heartbroken, starting fresh or hanging on, professionals and creatives, with and without animals, extroverted and introverted, organized and otherwise—I’ve seen it all. My favorite part was always providing an experience of peace in their living situation, a space in which they could move their lives forward and evolve.
For a while, I sidelined my organizing and other useful skills to focus on art and the house, but whenever someone needed my help, I eagerly took on a new client. This work made me feel as alive as creating a painting, and I realized I no longer wanted to sideline my desire to help in that way. It was then that I realized there was a way to structure things so that no part of me or my clients would be left out. I could treat the holistic nature of each project or problem with everything I have to offer.
At the core of everything I do is the desire to help people evolve, to find their next steps towards their best selves. Whether through my art, organizing skills, coaching, or home-related solutions, I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to assist others happily, joyously, and effectively.
